Matter exists in many different forms.
We call these forms substances.
Some exmples of substances are: plastic, wood, air, carbon...
PURE SUBSTANCES AND MIXTURES
There are two types of matter: pure substances and mixtures.
Pure substances: Contain only one type of material.
Examples: Oxygen, gold, salt, sugar...
Mixtures: Contain two or more pure substances.
For example, milk contains different substances such us water, sugars, fat, proteins...
Most substances that surround us are mixtures.
TYPES OF MIXTURES
All mixtures contain at least two pure substances.
There are some types of mixtures:
Heterogeneous mixture: The substances that form the mixture can be distinguished.
Example: Soil , picadillo soup.
Homogeneous mixtures or solutions: The substances that form the mixture can not be distinguished.
Example: air, seawater.
Alloys: They are homogeneous mixtures in which one or more component is a metal.
Example: Steel is an alloy of carbon and iron.

Milk is mixture. |
 |
Steel is an alloy. |

Picadillo soup is an heterogeneous mixture. |
